Before your site converts anyone, it needs to give them a good reason to stay there more than 30 seconds. Your site’s appearance plays a major role in not only retaining the visitors but also making them come back. It’s a known fact that when a visitor comes to your site for the very first time, they decide to stay or exit and this whole process takes place in 3 seconds. What really sucks is you will never get another chance. A clear, simple design with good navigation will fare better than a site lacking in those areas. You know, everyone wants everything to be ‘instant.’ Impatience and immediate gratification – those are the orders of the day. You know there are billions of pages on every imaginable topic. There are so many choices, and with an ADD like attention span, it’s tough getting repeat visitors.

But if you are able to give them instant gratification, instant solutions, and show them a way towards fulfilling their needs fast, then they can become a regular visitor. That’s why market research is important, so you will know what they want – and then it’s just a matter of giving it to them. Keep a note of the topics they are interested in and provide fresh content on them on a regular basis. Then, get to know your visitors, your market, and build relationships.

There are very many reasons to not use flash. Not everyone has hi-speed internet, believe it or not, and flash takes forever and a day to load in those situations. Fact: search engine spiders cannot read flash – end of story, no SEO, no rankings. People online are ridiculously impatient, so you’re really risking it if you use it. Flash was popular a long time ago because it looked cool and it was novel. Even though they can be impressive and fancy, they can get irritating at times. If your only goal is to look cool and impress (and not make money), then by all means, get flash. But beyond that, if you are looking out to make some real money and build a strong relationship, then valuable content with some attractive graphics is the key to success.

A lot of webmasters overlook an important tip, namely to keep the layout of the content narrow. It is quite annoying to have to scroll back and forth to read the full text and it may alienate your visitors. They may end up leaving your site out of boredom, which is something you really want to avoid.

This is exactly why you see the newspapers having short columns. Narrow text columns are both easier to read while also being appealing from a visual viewpoint.
